Systems Engaged, Full Speed Ahead!

Geb Thomas

We are pleased to announce that this morning the Iowa Board of Regents approved our proposal to divide our Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department into a Department of Mechanical Engineering and a Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. This reorganization will enable both faculty groups to more easily evolve with their disciplines and better serve the needs of the two student populations.

We’re particularly excited to explicitly incorporate “Systems” as a facet of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. This reflects the shift of this profession over the last decade and emphasizes the utility of the traditional IE skills in the broader areas in which they are applied, including transportation, logistics, service, manufacturing and healthcare. The IE degree designation, and the associated ABET accreditation process, will not change at this time, a position generally consistent with other IE programs.

The reorganization will take place as of July 1st at which time, Prof. Ching-Long Lin will continue to lead the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Geb Thomas will begin service as the Interim DEO of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

We look forward to the opportunities and flexibility the new arrangement will provide, in particular the opportunity to engage ISE alumni and students in the new energy and momentum that this reorganization will bring, under the slogan: “Systems Engaged: Full Speed Ahead.”
